BACK TO SCHOOL INFO

(VIRTUAL) OPEN HOUSE : Wednesday August 12!

Please plan on visiting our VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE
starting the morning of August 12th

Open house will be a chance to order t-shirts and masks, and other Fernwear, purchase a PTA membership, yearbook, yard signs, sign up for clubs, and get information about picking up pre-ordered supplies or buying supplies if you need.

It will be VIRTUAL and NOT AT THE SCHOOL and will run through our PTA website fernbankelementary.com and our SquareSpace store set-up.

Open House starts on Wednesday, August 12th in the morning, but it will remain open so you do not have to rush or stand in line (one definite benefit to being virtual!)

Teachers will publish their meet and greet schedules later.

A NOTE ABOUT DEVICES :

Dear Fernbank Families of Pre-K through 2nd graders,

Per the District's directive in response to the increased demand for Chromebooks across the whole country, we are not going to be distributing devices to our Pre-K through 2nd grade students until given the green light by the Superintendent.

Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris is a powerful advocate for equity and she brings that advocacy to DeKalb with her. In a desire to provide as much equity as possible to the students of DeKalb, she has determined that, until we have enough devices in the District to provide one for EVERY Pre-K through 2nd grade student who needs one, no school in DeKalb will disseminate devices to our youngest students for the time being.

During the Board of Education Meeting on Monday, it was shared that, although plenty of devices have been ordered for every DCSD student to have one, the manufacturers cannot keep up with demand and school districts across the US are experiencing this lag in delivery times.

To compensate for this, DeKalb has compiled a “backpack” full of meaningful curriculum and learning modules that your children can utilize until we have sufficient devices across the district. These curriculum backpacks will be arriving within a week and we will write to you with our pick-up plan as soon as they arrive at school.

I also want to remind you that DeKalb is a “bring your own device” district which means that your child can participate in online learning via a cell phone, a tablet, an ipad or ipod, any computer, or most any tablet. Families, please be assured that we will work to get Chromebooks for any child who needs one as soon as they arrive in the District.

Many thanks for your support, patience, and understanding.

Ms. Ray

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS for FIRST 2 WEEKS:
I want you all to have a realistic idea of what the first couple of weeks will be like: please know that the first two weeks will not be indicative of the level of rigor your child will experience this school year.

The first two weeks are going to be a time for establishing norms, bonding as a class,
figuring out how we are going to work together, and ensuring that every student has the
supplies, devices, and connectivity they need to success.

WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK, I PROMISE!
I thank you for your trust in Fernbank to make sure that your child has everything s/he needs to have a successful school year. Our teachers are already planning and excited about getting started. We are working at lightening speed to get everything done that usually we would have prepared over the spring and summer months—it is compacted into days now and we are making the magic happen—thank you for trusting our process.

DAILY SCHEDULE UPDATE:

LINK TO DAILY SCHEDULES BY GRADE
Fernbank will follow the same time blocked schedule so that grades have classes at the same times. Each teacher will distribute their own schedule for their class, based on the time blocks.

WHAT ABOUT WEDNESDAY?
Wednesdays will be different in that we will not have synchronous instructional periods like Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday—however, Wednesday is NOT an off day—teachers may provide asynchronous instruction for this day along with assignments. It is also a day for small group or individual tutorials when needed as well as parent-teacher conferences, collaborative planning for teachers and faculty meetings.

WHO IS MY KID’S TEACHER?
by Tuesday, August 11th you should have heard from your child(ren)’s teacher(s).

We are using ClassTag and the way it works is that the teacher builds a homeroom and then sends out invites to you. From your responses, we will build our school-wide directory. This is part of the reason we are doing this earlier—we desperately need an accurate email data base so we can be sure we are reaching all of you.

Our DeKalb-provided SchoolMessenger system is not reaching all of you reliably so we are trying to do an end-around by creating our own through ClassTag.
Be both watchful and patient about receiving this information.

COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES:
There has been a glitch in our Infinite Campus program and as a result many of the emails that were in there before are no longer populating in the SchoolMessenger site, which is the main tool I use to communicate with you. As a result, we are sending this message through every channel and avenue that we have.

Please visit this page and our website for information and resources.

Please direct ANY QUESTIONS, to info@fernbankelementary.com

CLASSTAG TO THE RESCUE:
To rectify this situation as soon as possible, our teachers will be adding your names and contact information to our school-wide ClassTag account. This is a communications app that works in real time from virtually any device. The sooner we have all of you in there, the better.
Please watch for an invitation from your teacher to download the app and sign up.

TECHNOLOGY SURVEY:
As soon as we have everyone’s contact information, we will be taking a survey of technology for all of our families. We need to determine as quickly as we possibly can which families will need a device for their child(ren).
If you have a device with a camera which you can dedicate exclusively to your child’s learning, then you are welcome to use that.  DeKalb County is a “bring your own device” district in that way.

If you do not have a sufficient device for your child(ren) and need one to be supplied, this survey will capture that.

Technology Survey>>
Only one reply is necessary.

Please do not reply more than once!

Additionally, you can reach out to your teacher at any time with technology concerns and they will connect you with the proper help.

AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS
We WILL have clubs this year!
They will be offered virtually and, because they will be virtual, there will be more room in each
club.

Questions?

lined-paper.jpg

Fernbank Families,

We will be collecting and posting all BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION here, please use it as a resource for any questions, if you can't find an answer here, please email info@fernbankelementary.com

School is scheduled to start on August 17th, but please be aware that it will be a “slow start”. Your child will not be busy with school work right away, we will be getting to know each other and finding our way to adjusting to this new and very different year.
