A NOTE ABOUT DEVICES :

Dear Fernbank Families of Pre-K through 2nd graders,

Per the District's directive in response to the increased demand for Chromebooks across the whole country, we are not going to be distributing devices to our Pre-K through 2nd grade students until given the green light by the Superintendent.

Superintendent Cheryl Watson-Harris is a powerful advocate for equity and she brings that advocacy to DeKalb with her. In a desire to provide as much equity as possible to the students of DeKalb, she has determined that, until we have enough devices in the District to provide one for EVERY Pre-K through 2nd grade student who needs one, no school in DeKalb will disseminate devices to our youngest students for the time being.

During the Board of Education Meeting on Monday, it was shared that, although plenty of devices have been ordered for every DCSD student to have one, the manufacturers cannot keep up with demand and school districts across the US are experiencing this lag in delivery times.

To compensate for this, DeKalb has compiled a “backpack” full of meaningful curriculum and learning modules that your children can utilize until we have sufficient devices across the district. These curriculum backpacks will be arriving within a week and we will write to you with our pick-up plan as soon as they arrive at school.

I also want to remind you that DeKalb is a “bring your own device” district which means that your child can participate in online learning via a cell phone, a tablet, an ipad or ipod, any computer, or most any tablet. Families, please be assured that we will work to get Chromebooks for any child who needs one as soon as they arrive in the District.

Many thanks for your support, patience, and understanding.

Ms. Ray

WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK, I PROMISE!
I thank you for your trust in Fernbank to make sure that your child has everything s/he needs to have a successful school year. Our teachers are already planning and excited about getting started. We are working at lightening speed to get everything done that usually we would have prepared over the spring and summer months—it is compacted into days now and we are making the magic happen—thank you for trusting our process.

DAILY SCHEDULE UPDATE:

LINK TO DAILY SCHEDULES BY GRADE
Fernbank will follow the same time blocked schedule so that grades have classes at the same times. Each teacher will distribute their own schedule for their class, based on the time blocks.

WHAT ABOUT WEDNESDAY?
Wednesdays will be different in that we will not have synchronous instructional periods like Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday—however, Wednesday is NOT an off day—teachers may provide asynchronous instruction for this day along with assignments. It is also a day for small group or individual tutorials when needed as well as parent-teacher conferences, collaborative planning for teachers and faculty meetings.

COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES:
There has been a glitch in our Infinite Campus program and as a result many of the emails that were in there before are no longer populating in the SchoolMessenger site, which is the main tool I use to communicate with you. As a result, we are sending this message through every channel and avenue that we have.

Please visit this page and our website for information and resources.

Please direct ANY QUESTIONS, to info@fernbankelementary.com

CLASSTAG TO THE RESCUE:
To rectify this situation as soon as possible, our teachers will be adding your names and contact information to our school-wide ClassTag account. This is a communications app that works in real time from virtually any device. The sooner we have all of you in there, the better.
Please watch for an invitation from your teacher to download the app and sign up.
