THIS WEEK AT A GLANCE

Next Monday, January 20, 2020 is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.  No School next Monday! Consider a community service project!

click an event for more details^^ (if there are any!)

Parents, you are a vital part of the school’s instructional team. As we shift into high gear for instruction in this second semester, I want to encourage you to read to your kids, read with your kids, and/or make sure your kids are reading independently.  Reading comprehension is so important to every academic subject and research shows that parents who take time to read with kids can make a huge difference.

For children to succeed in school, they need to stay well, which is a challenge for all of us during cold and flu season. This has been one of the worst flu seasons for children in many years. Please see the chart below for ways we can all stay healthy.

INFO FROM DRUID HILLS CLUSTER ALLIANCE: DCSD BOARD MEETING TONIGHT

DeKalb County School Board Meeting - Monday, 1/13/2020, 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm, Community Input Session, 7 - 9 pm Board Meeting, DCSD Board Room, 1701 Mtn. Industrial, Stone Mountain, GA - Come out to support Druid Hills' request for a new track at DHMS during the Community Input Session.  Let's show our support with large numbers in the audience as we hear our very own Andy Montgomery, Bert Ackermann, Joanna Shepherd and Sherilyn Narker address the Board on the terrible and unsafe conditions at our track and how we are the only Cluster in the County with high school and middle school students and athletes who do not have access to a safe, all weather track.  Our specific request is approval for emergency funding for the immediate replacement of the DHMS track.  DHMS is also the host of Dekalb County Cross Country meets, so all student athletes across the County would benefit from a new DHMS track.  This will be the second Board meeting in a row where we are making our case for a new track, and we will continue coming to the monthly board meetings until we get approval for a new, safe track like all of the other Clusters in Dekalb County.

At the Business meeting portion from 7 - 9 pm, the Board will be voting to approve funding to replace lead paint windows at Avondale Elementary School that are flaking both inside the classroom and outside where children play.  Let's show our support for Avondale in this critical request to provide a safe environment for our students and teachers.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WINTER CAMPAIGN

Did you know that the greatest risk to a child isn’t riding a bus, but approaching or leaving one. STOP means STOP! As you’ll see in this video, it’s just not a bus you’re stopping for, it’s a bus full of students.
