Good Morning Fernbank! The weather is turning chilly and will be especially cold in the mornings tomorrow and Wednesday, so please bundle your children up and make sure to label all coats and jackets!

Looking ahead, we have our indoor/outdoor workday this Saturday, November 16, with projects for all ages. I can’t wait to see our school on Monday! (See below for more information on how to volunteer.)  I am also looking forward to our annual International Friends Dinner coming up on December 6.  This is a great chance eat some wonderful food from all over the world, enjoy good music, and to see how many countries are represented here at Fernbank.  I hope to see you there!

TIME TO ORDER YOUR YEARBOOK

Remember the classmates and teachers, Field Day, the musicals, clubs and so many fun events in the 2019/2020 Fernbank Yearbook.  Did you know that Fernbank’s yearbook is all color pages with a hard cover?  The yearbook is not mainly featuring 5th graders.  Each class has a page of portraits, and each grade has a page of candids.  We place the order based on purchases, and when they are gone, we cannot order more.

Now $45.  The price increases after November 22.

Submit Photos for Yearbook

The yearbook committee always needs photo submissions of school events, field trips, interesting classroom activities or just kids looking cute at school.  Send to fernbankyearbookphotos@gmail.com.  For example, Field Day photos!  Please indicate what grade(s) the students are in.

GIFT CARDS FOR CENTRAL NIGHT SHELTER

Each year in memory of Katie Bashor, our former PE paraprofessional that passed away almost 4 years ago, the Fernbank Community comes together to collect $5.00 McDonalds gift cards. These cards will be given to the men at the Central Night shelter that Coach Bashor and her husband served as directors for many years. Katie always said that the best gift to give these men was a gift card to McDonald’s as it would allow them to buy a cup of coffee and sit inside a warm place on a cold winter day. The PE Coaches will be collecting cards or money. Coach Sutton has volunteered to pick up cards with any money brought in. Thanks for your help in continuing this tradition to honor Coach Bashor. We’d like to collect all cards by December 4th.

SCHOOL PHOTOS ORDERS ENDING NOV. 15

Final day for ordering school photos is November 15. Please send order forms in to your child's teacher or the front office.

SUSTAINABILITY FIELD TRIP NEWS

Last week, the Go Green Club and Sustainability Committee members visited @compostnowga to see what happens to our school’s compost. We learned about the process of nutrient recycling (ie composting ) and observed the differences in each stage of this process (which takes about 8-10 months!).

The food waste (and compostable waste) that we have saved from landfills (so far 32,000 lbs!!!!!) is being “recycled” into nutrient rich soil that we use in our thriving school garden.
