This is leftover food from lunch - all compostable fruits & veggies.
All the leftover styrofoam trays used during 1 day of lunch!
Sending sandwiches? Do the ones you send get eaten?

Plastic wrap leftovers!
LOOK AT ALL THAT LUNCH TRASH!
On Thursday, the Go green club and parent volunteers did a trash audit during lunch in the cafeteria.
We helped the students sort their lunch waste to see where we could make some easy changes to create less waste .
Here is what we goes into the 8-10 65 gallon trash bags EACH LUNCH:
• Styrofoam Trays: 500
• Styrofoam bowls (for baked sweet potatoes) : 120
• Plastic "cups" (for whole apples, oranges, pineapple slices, broccoli, salad) : 600
• Cutlery (Plastic Bag containing a plastic spork, tiny straw, thin napkin): 500 (most of these were unopened)
• Food waste: 1 trash bag
• Compostable food waste (fruit and vegetables): 90 pounds!
• Unopened Milk: 50 cartons
• Half finished milk: 7 gallons
• A trash bag of packaging: ziplock bags, packaging, styrofoam cups, juice boxes and pouches, foil, yogurt cups, straws (from packed lunches)
ALL OF THIS GOES INTO THE LANDFILL!
WASTE FROM PACKED LUNCHES
PLEASE think about what we can all do to send less to landfills.
here are some IDEAS:
• bring in reusable containers, water bottles, cutlery and napkins
• ask your child to bring back what they don't eat
• reuse ziplock bags
• eliminate single use plastic
• reduce the amount of packaging in your child's lunch box
• compost fruit & vegetables
PLEASE think about what we can all do as individuals, families, communities, to send less to landfills.
Email us with any ideas, questions or if you would like to work with us in trying to come up with creative sustainable ways to consume less, make less trash at school and at home.
Thank you, Justine, Karen and all of the other parent volunteers who are teaching our children waste awareness and ways that it can be avoided. We appreciate all of your hard work!
THIS FRIDAY IS SALAD DAY - WE NEED MORE SALADS PLEASE!
One of our teachers' favorite days of the year is coming up THIS Friday May 4th! Salad Day is just one more really awesome thing that our hospitality committee organizes to make our teachers and staff feel loved and appreciated.
Help these hard-working folks celebrate the close of the school year by providing part of their yummy spring lunch. We are asking parents to provide a variety of salads (greens, fruit, pasta, chicken salads, etc) for them to enjoy.
Sign up here if you are able to bring something!
You can drop your items in the teacher workroom adjacent to the media center or in the front office. Please drop off no later than 10am (Kindergarten eats early!)
Thank you, Fernbank parents!
PTA GENERAL MEETING TONIGHT
We will be meeting in the Fernbank cafeteria at 6:00 pm this evening to hold our executive team election. Join us!
FERNBANK SUMMER CAMP: TUITION DUE THIS FRIDAY MAY 4TH
For those of you who have registered up for our summer camp, this is a reminder that tuition of $125/week is due by this Friday, May 4th.
HAVE YOU TURNED IN YOUR PROOF OF RESIDENCY?
Every year, our students must provide a current utility bill showing their residence within Fernbank's district. Send in a copy of yours to your child's teacher ASAP!
WHO'S EXCITED FOR THE FERNBANK FOLLIES??
Next Friday, May 11th, from 6-8 pm, many of our 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students will be performing in the Fernbank Follies! You never know what you're going to see at this super fun talent/variety show. Join us!
Parents of participants, remember there will be a rehearsal next Thursday after school!
ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS!!
We are planning some great end of year things for your 5th grader! Today, hopefully you sent your child wearing something nice for his/her 5th grade portrait. We saw some fine looking 5th graders walking into school this morning!
Save these dates during the last week of school:
Monday May 21st: 5th grade party!! It will be from 4:30-6:30 pm at Fernbank. Sound kind of lame? We promise this party will be anything but lame! We have an awesome theme and A LOT of surprises planned! Email Alyse Ramer if you are interested in chaperoning.
Wednesday May 23rd: Starting at 9am, we will have our 5th grade graduation ceremony.
Thursday May 24th is the last day of school and it's tradition for the 5th graders to "walk the halls" and say goodbye to the school. Let's just say you might want to send some tissues! This tradition will begin right around 1:00 pm.
Have you paid your 5th grade dues??
Please send in $50 per 5th grader! Dues pay for end of year activities such as the 5th grade party, the 5th grade graduation and reception, the class gift and teacher gifts. Fernbank has been so good to our kiddos and they have worked so hard, let’s make sure we give them a send off they deserve! The Fifth grade committee relies on dues to make this possible. Questions? Contact Alyse Ramer at email@example.com
ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE BY MAY 11TH!
AVOID A RUN-IN WITH THE SHERIFF!
In just 2 short weeks our library will be closing. All student books are officially due May 11, or as soon after as possible.
For the last 2 weeks of school, Ms. Jacobs--- aka "The Library Sheriff" --- will be joined by her trusty Deputy, Ms. Richmond, as we round up all the books (or replacement-cost-fees) and get the Library Ranch ready for next year!
We will be sad to close the library, but-- Hurrah!--- the PTA will be bringing Scholastic Spring BookFair to the Library May 14-18! Look out for more information coming soon.
ANNUAL BOOK FLOAT PARADE IS FRIDAY MAY 18TH
Many thanks to our teachers, students, and families for preparing to celebrate favorite books during our Fernbank tradition of the Annual BookFloat Parade. All are invited to attend 1:15-1:45 pm, as our school parades around the parking lot on Friday, May 18, in front of school.
Each class is selecting a favorite book, author, or series to celebrate in a variety of parade-style ways. Our 5th grade band will be playing music to march by. More information will come later!
VOLUNTEERS SURVEYING STILL IN PROCESS
Thank you to everyone who has filled out the parent volunteer survey! It will be super helpful as we start planning for next year. We are still placing individuals in leadership roles. If you're interested, fill out the survey soon! Once you've taken the survey, be on the lookout for an email from firstname.lastname@example.org, as we work to place you in the perfect spot.
If you'd like to know about volunteer opportunities first, please check out our special volunteer page created just for you! Read all about our various leadership groups and committees, then take our volunteer survey so we can best match your talents and availability with our needs.
Fernbank can't run without the active participation our parents! There's an opportunity for everyone to engage, no matter your schedule. Whatever you're good at - we would love to tap into YOUR talents!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE DRUID HILLS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS!
It won't be long before your child is ready to graduate from Druid Hills High School too! (Okay maybe it will be a long time...) Our outstanding cluster high school's juniors and seniors are doing some amazing things - check out a few!
