Have you noticed how nice our landscaping looks now?
We owe a huge thank you to the Pack 6 Boy Scouts and everyone who turned out to help them beautify our school last Saturday! Site One Landscape Supply and Buck Jones Nursery generously donated the beautiful roses that can now be seen around the front of Fernbank. We appreciate you, Dave Basinger, for organizing this big event and everyone who endured the heat to make our school look great!
FERNBANK'S WEEKLY NEWS DIGEST!
FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL EDITION
THURSDAY AUGUST 10, 2017
ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Now that we have the first few days of school under our belts, we are ready for some serious learning! As a reminder, if you're driving or walking your children to school, we ask that you drop your child(ren) between 7:00 am - 7:30 am so they have enough time to get to their classroom by 7:40 am, when the last bell will ring. Patrols should arrive by 7:15 am so they may be at their posts by 7:20 am.
We also ask that you now start dropping children off at the designated cones only - via the carpool lanes or at the front door - instead of walking your student into the building. We have teachers/staff and patrols ready to greet, direct and/or escort your child to his/her classroom. The mornings are very busy and your teacher is deeply involved with his or her class - if you need something, send your teacher a handwritten note in your child's folder or email him/her. All teachers are more than happy to talk with you but will need to schedule a special time to do so. For urgent messages, call (or stop into) the front office at 678-874-9302.
Afternoon dismissal will begin to move more efficiently this week. The buses leave the school at approximately 2:30 pm. For Bus Riders: Be at your child's bus stop a few minutes early as the afternoon drop-off times can vary slightly. For Carpoolers: Carpool begins as soon as the buses leave. Please stay in line and remain in your car - your child to be brought out to you. For Walkers: Students may be picked up at the doors next to the playground (unless it's raining in which case they will be in the front lobby).
*If your child is a car rider, please observe the traffic flow procedure we have in place. You must stay in the carpool line and follow the flow of traffic to ensure the safety of our students. (see map and rules below)
Thank you for your cooperation - if we all work together, things will go very smoothly!
ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL RULES
If you purchased our pre-packaged school supplies, everything needed for your student's schoolwork was included in your purchase. However, there are a few extra classroom necessities that we ask that you bring - like paper towels, tissues, etc. If you haven't already done so, please send these items (see list) in as soon as possible. Our teachers thank you!
BACK TO SCHOOL PICNIC - FRIDAY AUGUST 18!
Please make sure to join us for our annual back-to-school picnic! Bring a blanket, a picnic dinner, and your family to the back field and playground area starting at 6pm. You won't want to miss this opportunity to meet new classmates and their families, and catch up with friends you haven't seen since last school year. More details to follow next week.
SPIRIT NIGHT - AUGUST 24th AT ATHENS PIZZA!!
Fernbank's first Spirit Night of 2017-18 will be August 24th from 5:00 - 9:00 pm at Athens Pizza on Clairmont Road. Come on out and support our school while having a great dinner with Fernbank friends!
Spirit Nights (or weeks) are partnerships with local restaurants, where a portion of the proceeds from the evening's sales comes back to Fernbank! We hold Spirit Nights every few weeks - they're so much fun and such an easy way to support our school. Keep an eye out for upcoming events here in the Flash Digest.
FIFTH GRADE TRIP
We apologize for our error - some of our printed materials said that the 5th grade trip was in September. The date was moved to November 8-10th. Please mark your calendars accordingly! 5th grade dues and the fee for the 5th grade trip may be made online via the Fernbank Store.
ANOTHER "HEALTHY" WIN FOR FERNBANK!
We are excited to announce that once again Fernbank Elementary has made the Healthier Generation’s 2017 list of one of America’s healthiest schools. Our staff has worked hard to give students the healthy school they deserve and we want you to join in and help us! In order for Fernbank Elementary to remain on the list of healthiest schools, we must follow a Healthy School Policy. The policy states that we cannot sell or serve/offer unhealthy foods or beverages during school day and extended day activities such as aftercare or clubs. This includes snack time and school celebrations. For example, we do not celebrate birthdays with sweets or junk food nor do teachers use candy or food as incentives. All parents/teachers/staff must follow this Wellness Policy as members of the Fernbank Community. Here's a full list of the Healthier Generation’s healthy snack & beverage ideas. Thank you for following this policy!
THE SOLAR ECLIPSE IS COMING AND WE WILL DISMISS AN HOUR LATE!
The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) will extend its school day by one hour on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, to provide safe viewing and instructional opportunities related to the expected solar eclipse that day. That means we will be dismissing at 3:20 pm instead of 2:20 pm.
According to NASA, the solar eclipse will occur across North America that day when the moon obscures 97.4 percent of the sun. The solar eclipse will be viewable around 1:02 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. DCSD reminds its community that it is not safe to stare directly into the sun without special glasses, and it is providing lessons that will allow students to safely take advantage of the moment.
We will share more details closer to the date!
THE ONLINE FERNBANK STORE IS NOW OPEN!
For those of you who weren't able to get to open house, or who came but didn't have a change to purchase your t-shirts, PTA membership, etc - never fear, our online store is now open! Items purchased via the online store will be sent home with your oldest Fernbank student. T-shirts will be ordered in bulk at the end of August and will be distributed in early September.
For any questions related to PTA programs/events or to provide feedback, please email our co-presidents Cindy Spalding and Beth Collums at
