It was great to see so many of our parents at both of the Fernbank 101 sessions last week. We were happy to welcome Ms. Jacqueline Taylor, Principal at Druid Hills Middle School, and our teachers and administrators did an awesome job answering questions as well.
Our school year has gotten off to a great start. I am so proud of everyone for getting here on time (7:30!) Our carpool line is safe, well managed, and running smoothly. Keep up the good work, Fernbank!

Traditionally, our first kid-free social event at Fernbank has been in late winter or early spring at our Annual Auction. We were thinking...why not do something in the fall??
We always do a fall fundraising campaign to support the school (Fund the Fern), so we have decided to kick it off this year with a party! We will be hosting the party at Big Tex Cantina from 7-9pm on Thursday evening, September 13th. More details will be coming soon but in the meantime - get it on the calendar and get your babysitter lined up. You won't want to miss this!!

SPIRIT NIGHT AT LUCKY'S AND ALI'S COOKIES ON WEDNESDAY, AUG. 29
Looking for a fun way to support the school? Come out and enjoy a Spirit Night this Wednesday, August 29th from
5-9pm at Lucky's AND Ali’s Cookies in Emory Village! Both restaurants will donate a percentage of the sales from the evening to Fernbank! Be sure to say you’re with Fernbank while dining. See you there!
DIG IN THE DIRT WITH US! GARDEN CLUB WORK DAY SATURDAY, SEPT. 8!
Fernbank Garden Club will be working in our garden every second Saturday this fall. Our next work day will be Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9-11 am. Come dig in the dirt with us to keep those veggies healthy and abundant! No special gardening experience or tools necessary.

TESTING, TESTING, 1,2,3!
At the beginning, in the middle and end of the year, students take the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test. This adaptive test helps chart each child's proficiency and progress in various subjects during the school year. It helps our teachers tailor their curriculum to meet the needs of each of their students.
MAP testing has begun for some children and will continue in the coming couple of weeks. If you'd like to read more, visit our testing page!
VOLUNTEERING AT FERNBANK - WE NEED YOU!
Thank you, thank you for filling out your parent volunteer surveys. This information has been so useful in getting people connected with volunteer opportunities that best suit their interests, talents and schedules. We have started connecting with some of you about opportunities and we will be reaching out to many more in the coming weeks. Remember, we are asking each family to contribute at least 5 hours of their time to helping out at Fernbank - this is a great way to get started!

FERNBANK SCHOOL COUNCIL (PRINCIPAL ADVISORY COUNCIL) ELECTIONS!
Do you closely follow what DeKalb County Schools and DeKalb School Board District 2 are up to? Do you want to get more engaged in shaping Fernbank's future within our district? A position on our council might be for you!
"Principal Advisory Councils are coalitions of parents, guardians, and teachers that serve their school communities at 112 DCSD schools. Councils act as a link between the school and the community, encouraging engagement with stakeholders, increasing transparency, monitoring progress, and participating in the selection of a school’s principal."
We have two parent positions to fill this year and we are looking for candidates who are interested in being engaged in school district level policies and being a strong advocate for our kids. The two primary focuses of the council over the next year will likely be determining the future permanent student population of our school and developing a cluster alliance with other schools in the Druid Hills Cluster.
The election process has traditionally been run by each school, with elections each spring. This year, all elections will be handled by DeKalb County Schools. Those interested in joining a 2018-2019 Principal Advisory Council can declare their candidacy now until August 31. Applicants are required to complete a candidate declaration form, which can be found at www.dekalbschoolsga.org/school-councils. Feel free to reach out to any current council members if you have questions.
The voting window for 2018-2019 elections will be open September 18 at 8:00 a.m. until September 25 at 5:00 p.m. Electronic ballots will be sent to the email address on file in Infinite Campus for parents/guardians. (If you do not currently receive emails from DeKalb County Schools, please see Robynn Nelson-Floyd, our registrar, in the front office.)
TITLE I PARENT SURVEY
Our school is a Title I school, and as the parent/guardian of a child attending a Title I school you are an important part of the Title I team. Your input is vital in the planning and implementation of the parent and family engagement program and activities in our school. The focus of all Title I programs is to help eligible students meet the same high academic achievement standards expected of all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status and background. The following survey is confidential and will be used to assist us with future planning for parent and family engagement activities and events at our school.

Paddle for Press ON (formally Paddle For Patrick - same fun, different name!) is a party in and out of the pool for kids ages K-7th grade. It will be held on September 22 from 1-3:30 PM at Druid Hills Golf Club. Details HERE.
Press ON's mission is to identify feasible and ground-breaking alternative therapies for childhood cancers and to invest monies raised in a manner that supports the science and infrastructure needed to cure childhood cancer within our lifetime.
