THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
CLUB REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN
Club Registration is open now but DO NOT FORGET to come back and read today's FLASH. We have a lot of important things you need to know!!
Regarding this semester's clubs:
If your child is currently participating in any of the following clubs, you do not need to re-register them:
Chess, Go Green, Crochet, Tap-Ballet & Hip-Hop, Mock Trial, Walk / Run, and Junior Great Books.
Most of these clubs have a few spots available for additional sign-ups this semester.
What's changed from first semester?
Most of the clubs from first semester are returning with the exception of Ultimate Frisbee.
Two new clubs offered this Semester are MAGIC club and ETIQUETTE club.
We have changed vendors for Spanish Club - Fernbank's Lourdes Santiago, Anne Ferreira and Robynn Floyd are managing and instructing Spanish club this semester!
Varied Start Dates
Be sure to note when each club starts as Magic, Math and Girls on the Run begin the week of Feb. 5th. All others begin Jan. 8th.
THE LOVE FUND
Please remember to show some love to Fernbank's support staff this season. These individuals (including our custodians, cafeteria staff, paraprofessionals, and bus drivers) work hard to help Fernbank run smoothly each day.
Monetary donations (cash or checks made to “Fernbank Elementary PTA”) for the Love Fund may be sent in with your child to their homeroom teacher or sent directly to the office in an envelope marked “Love.”
All donations are greatly appreciated and should be turned in by Monday, December 18th .
Many Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Fernbank Student Council
THIS WEDNESDAY - WE NEED MORE (LOTS MORE!) HOLIDAY TREATS & VOLUNTEERS TO HELP
Another way we show our love for Fernbank's teachers and staff is our very special "Holiday Treats for Teachers" event. It is this Wednesday, December 13th. Parents provide cookies & treats, and the PTA provides a goody box for every employee in the building to fill and take home to share with their families (or keep them all to themselves!)
Our goal is for each staff member to have a dozen treats in their goodie box. We have over 120 employees in the building (including bus drivers) but only 52 dozen cookies and treats committed for Wednesday! Yikes! Can you make (or buy) something to share with them?
Also, as a part of Fund the Fern, we promised our teachers a 30 minute "vacation" to do whatever they please. We thought that having it the same day as the holiday treats would be fun so they could take their time and "pick and mingle" (if they choose to). But, we need parents to help watch their classrooms in order to do this. Any time you can provide is appreciated!!
Please help us make this day a huge success by signing up to volunteer your time and/or baking skills.
Thanks for all you do to help keep our teachers & staff happy at Fernbank!
FERNBANK STEM NIGHT IS TONIGHT!!
On Monday, December 11th from 5-7pm, Fernbank will be holding a Title I Schoolwide Family STEM night. Meet us in the cafeteria to discover the fun of science, technology, engineering & math at Fernbank!
Tour the Fernbank Garden, enjoy STEMTASTIC student presentations, engage in a hands-on STEM activity, and listen to our special speaker Ms. Kellie Ryan, STEM Professional Learning Facilitator for Regions I&II. You don't want to miss this fun night!
GA SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY
Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. Also, on December 20, 2017 parents are welcomed to take the parent survey at Fernbank Elementary School. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.

FERNBANK'S ANNUAL BLOOD DRIVE
Mark Tuesday January 23rd for Fernbank's 16th annual Red Cross Blood Drive! There are so many reasons to donate blood:
It feels great to donate!
You get free juice and delicious cookies.
It's something you can spare – most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
You will be someone's hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation.
SAGAMORE HILLS MATH TOURNAMENT!
Registration forms for the Sagamore Hills Math Tournament went home in a recent courier. The tournament will be held on Saturday, January 20, and is open to all 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-graders. To participate, you must register directly with Sagamore Hills, but we will also have a couple of (fun!) orientation/practice sessions beforehand with the Fernbank students.
If you've registered your child for the tournament, please contact Beth Urban Hart at firstname.lastname@example.org to be included in these practice sessions and so we know who's participating as we plan for the team event.
For any questions related to PTA programs/events or to provide feedback, please email our co-presidents Cindy Spalding and Beth Collums at
