THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
Many of our clubs still have space for second semester - register your child today!
IT'S ALMOST HOLIDAY BREAK - ENJOY THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT!
What an exciting week - with a lot going on! All holiday parties will be held Wednesday - times vary.
Every grade level is doing something different so please pay close attention to all communications you may have gotten from your teacher or room parents (regarding holiday party times and things to bring, teacher gifts, pajama days, etc.) Reach out directly to them if you have any questions.
The staff are getting into the spirit and students are welcome to join in the fun! They're wearing pajamas today, festive hats and socks tomorrow, and tacky holiday sweaters on Wednesday.
When there's so much happening, sometimes it's hard to keep up with! Please remember that our parent group on Facebook is a great resource for finding out information, asking questions, sharing pictures, and more. If you haven't joined the group, please do so now!
LAST CALL FOR THE LOVE FUND!
Please remember to show some love to Fernbank's support staff this season. These individuals (including our custodians, cafeteria staff, paraprofessionals, and bus drivers) work hard to help Fernbank run smoothly each day.
Monetary gifts (cash or checks made to “Fernbank Elementary PTA”) for the Love Fund may be sent in with your child to their homeroom teacher or sent directly to the office in an envelope marked “Love.”
All gifts are greatly appreciated and should be turned in TODAY! If you would like to contribute online, you can via paypal (make sure you note it's for the Love Fund).
Many Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Fernbank Student Council
THANK YOU FOR ALL THOSE HOLIDAY TREATS & VOLUNTEERING IN CLASSROOMS!
Last Wednesday, the hospitality committee held the PTA's "Holiday Treats for Teachers" event. Thank you to all the parents who provided cookies & treats. It was a huge success! (look at all these goodies!)
Thank you also to those parents who entertained classes while teachers took their Fund the Fern 30 minute "vacations". The teachers enjoyed a little time on their own doing whatever they wanted!
We couldn't have pulled any of this off without the support of our parents - Thank You for all you do to help keep our teachers & staff happy at Fernbank!
FERNBANK STEM NIGHT WAS AWESOME!!
On Monday, December 11, 2017 Fernbank Elementary hosted it’s 1st Annual Family STEM Night. STEM Night is a parent family engagement event held during the school year that features interactive activities geared towards discovering the fun of science, technology, engineering, and math at Fernbank.
During the session parents and students engaged in an exploration of Fernbank’s Garden which they also got to sample some delicious smoothies made with our own kale, grown from the outdoor learning garden. We also had the fabulous Ms. Kellie Ryan, Region 2 STEM Facilitator speak about the great benefits of a STEM education and how it furthers student learning. Parents were able to watch a short video of Fernbank students explaining the engineering design process of STEM projects completed this year in the classroom. Before concluding the night students were able to experiment like a scientist, create like a technologist, think like an engineer, and problem solve like a mathematician by participating the STEM exploration of creating a robotic hand with materials like straw, toothpicks, tape, and string.
We definitely had an awesome event. If you didn’t make it out this year, please make sure you come next year.

GA SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY
Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. Also, on December 20, 2017 parents are welcomed to take the parent survey at Fernbank Elementary School. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.

COLLABORATIVE Repurposed Art
Go GREEN collected so many plastic bottles and created an art piece!
A whale filled up with plastic bottles to represent the devastating effects of plastic consumption (especially single-use plastics) to our oceans and marine life. How can we reduce our plastic consumption? Where does plastic go when we "throw it away"?
If you around school this week, check out our plastic whale on display in the hallway by the gym!!!!!!
Have a fantastic winter break!!!
Email us with comments/ideas/collaborations.
We would love to hear from you!
Do you have good photos of Field Day, a musical, or a recent event at school? We need them ASAP to be included in the yearbook.
Email them or send a link to firstname.lastname@example.org. If taken on a phone, select the largest size when sending so we can make sure they look good in print.

MATH NIGHT AT FERNBANK!
We are excited to announce that Mathnasium corporate (in partnership with National PTA) has developed a special Math Night program for the 900+ franchises around the country to roll out to their local schools. Mathnasium of Decatur will be hosting DeKalb County's first ever Mathnasium Math Night at Fernbank from 6p-8p on Thursday, January 18th!
During Math Night, there will be ten math game/activity stations that will run concurrently with one another. Each student will receive a "Passport" that is marked at the completion of each station and turned in at the end for a goody bag. We will provide goody bags for each student who participates at the end of completing each of the 10 stations. We aim to generate lots of enthusiasm about math while having fun with both kids and parents.
Here is the flyer. Stay tuned for more details in the New Year!!
FERNBANK'S ANNUAL BLOOD DRIVE
Mark Tuesday January 23rd for Fernbank's 16th annual Red Cross Blood Drive! There are so many reasons to donate blood:
It feels great to donate!
You get free juice and delicious cookies.
It's something you can spare – most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
You will be someone's hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation.
SAGAMORE HILLS MATH TOURNAMENT!
Registration forms for the Sagamore Hills Math Tournament went home in a recent courier. The tournament will be held on Saturday, January 20, and is open to all 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-graders. To participate, you must register directly with Sagamore Hills, but we will also have a couple of (fun!) orientation/practice sessions beforehand with the Fernbank students.
If you've registered your child for the tournament, please contact Beth Urban Hart at firstname.lastname@example.org to be included in these practice sessions and so we know who's participating as we plan for the team event.
