THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
THE LOVE FUND
Room parents help organize holiday gift giving for our teaching staff, but we would also like to show appreciation for our fantastic support staff (40+) by providing them with a holiday gift. These individuals including our custodians, cafeteria staff, paras, and bus drivers, work hard to help Fernbank run smoothly each day. Monetary donations (cash or checks made to “Fernbank Elementary PTA”) for the Love Fund may be sent in with your child to their homeroom teacher or sent directly to the office in an envelope marked “Love.”
All donations are greatly appreciated and should be turned in by Monday, December 18th . Many Thanks and Happy Holidays!

GA SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY
Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. Also, on December 20, 2017 parents are welcomed to take the parent survey at Fernbank Elementary School. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.
HELP US CELEBRATE OUR TEACHERS WITH HOLIDAY TREATS & A MINI "VACATION"
The top incentive for teachers from our Fund the Fern fall fundraiser was a 30 minute "vacation" - a short break where teachers can do whatever they please! We are asking parent volunteers to be with students in the classrooms while teachers get a well-deserved mini-break. We have 2 hour time slots available for sign up, so you will be helping more than one teacher enjoy his/her break.
We have decided that this mini break should coincide with our highly anticipated "Holiday Treats for Teachers" event, on Wednesday, December 13th. For those new to Fernbank or unfamiliar with this, it is one of the most LOVED events we do for our teachers & staff. We ask parents to provide cookies & treats, and we provide a goody box for every employee in the building to fill and take home to share with their families (or keep them all to themselves!)
Please consider helping us offer the teachers & staff an amazing selection of goodies and/or enjoy their mini "vacation" by signing up here!
Thanks for all you do to help keep our teachers & staff happy at Fernbank!

FERNBANK'S ANNUAL BLOOD DRIVE
Mark Tuesday January 23rd for Fernbank's 16th annual Red Cross Blood Drive! There are so many reasons to donate blood:
It feels great to donate!
You get free juice and delicious cookies.
It's something you can spare – most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
You will be someone's hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation.
GO GREEN AND RECYCLE YOUR GENTLY USED BACKPACKS!
Go Green and recycle your gently used backpacks!!!
Deadline December 7
We are collecting as many gently used or new backpacks stuffed with winter necessities for homeless adults and at risk individuals. The closure of Atlanta's largest homeless shelter in August means more people living unsheltered on our city streets than before. Please give what you can to help!
Each bag should have the following:
(Trial size on the toiletries is just fine)
You may be amazed to find these items in your home, going unused! We are striving for as many completed backpacks as we can get since Safe House can serve hundreds a day during the winter months. We will accept any of these items individually as well.
There will be a donation box set up in the front of the school November 27-December 7.
Please be kind to our earth and each other!!
Please contact Ainsley Waken 404.797.1858 if you have any questions.
SAGAMORE HILLS MATH TOURNAMENT!
Registration forms for the Sagamore Hills Math Tournament went home in a recent courier. The tournament will be held on Saturday, January 20, and is open to all 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-graders. To participate, you must register directly with Sagamore Hills, but we will also have a couple of (fun!) orientation/practice sessions beforehand with the Fernbank students.
If you've registered your child for the tournament, please contact Beth Urban Hart at firstname.lastname@example.org to be included in these practice sessions and so we know who's participating as we plan for the team event.
For any questions related to PTA programs/events or to provide feedback, please email our co-presidents Cindy Spalding and Beth Collums at
If you need to publish any information in the Flash digest, you can do so by emailing us at
