PLEASE - NO SWEET TREATS ON VALENTINE'S DAY!

You all should have received a note from your teacher regarding Valentine's Day. We will not have class parties, but children may exchange valentines if they choose to. They may decorate a box to collect any valentines they receive. If your child is bringing valentines, make sure he/she brings one for every child in his/her class!

We know that many store-bought valentines come with candy but since we participate programs that encourage healthy eating and wellness - like the governor's SHAPE program - we ask that you DO NOT SEND SWEETS. Thank you for your cooperation!

BETTER YET, GO GREEN AND MAKE YOUR VALENTINES INSTEAD OF BUYING THEM!

We LOVE our earth. Please be mindful when making purchases for holidays like Valentine's Day.

Think about creative ways to reuse/repurpose paper, cardboard, plastics to make Valentine's cards.

(For example, use comic strips from newspaper or old pretty calendar pages as wrapping or to decorate shoe boxes, cut hearts out of cardboard and decorate with back of flyers you already have)

Here are some low waste/waste free ideas.

Please be KIND to our Earth. Thank you from GO Green!!!

SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS ARE DUE ON WEDNESDAY! FAMILY NIGHT IS THURSDAY!

4th and 5th grade science fair participants - don't forget your project is due this Wednesday!

Projects should be taken directly to the cafeteria by 8am for judging.

If your child is participating in this exciting event, they should have received a unique number to display on the left hand side of the project board for identification. Projects should not have the participant's name or likeness on the display so it may be judged anonymously.

Family Viewing Night is this Thursday February 15th from 6-7pm in the cafeteria. Please have your child wear dark skirts/slacks and a white shirt to family viewing night. Each student will stand next to his/her project to share their findings and answer any questions others may have. Projects should be taken home when you leave Family Viewing Night!

REMEMBER THERE IS SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY BUT NOT NEXT MONDAY, FEB. 19TH

As a reminder, we are making up one of our snow days this Friday, Feb. 16th, which was originally scheduled to be off. Enjoy your holiday with a day off from school on Monday!

CAROLINE ROGERS CONTINUES TO THE REGIONAL SPELLING BEE!

Congratulations to Caroline Rogers (4th, Ms. Sturkey's class)--- she represented Fernbank at the DCSD Spelling Bee and won 3rd place!

Caroline spent the evening of February 8 calmly spelling her way through eight rounds of amazing words that began with 95 students 4th-8th grade from all DeKalb County elementary and middle schools.  Placing 3rd place allows her to go on the Regionals at the end of February, along with the other top 7 students from the Bee.

Congratulations also goes to the 1st place winner, Sahasra Maddu, Druid Hills Middle 7th grade student who also represented Fernbank when she was at our school.

A last wonderful note about the DCSD Bee is that the 2nd place winner is a 4th grader from Montclair Elementary, a community where many of our students come from.

Thank you, Caroline, we are so proud of you. Good luck and great spelling at Regionals!

CAN'T STOP, WON'T STOP READING (AND LOGGING THOSE HOURS!)

Interested in your student earning a free summer ticket to 6 Flags Over Georgia in honor of reading 6 hours? In the January 10th courier, teachers sent a letter (and required Reading Log form) about the 2018 Six Flags Six Hour Reading Program for Fernbank Elementary. (Letter/forms are also available in English and Spanish in the Library).

Students who want to participate in this program use the Reading Log form to record 6 hours of reading accomplished between January 1 and February 23. If you TURN THE READING LOG IN TO TEACHER by February 23 (properly signed by parent, etc.), your student will receive one ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia Amusement Park for a summer visit. Tickets will be sent home in courier as soon as we get them in May.

HAVE YOU ORDERED YOUR YEARBOOK??

Order your yearbook now online for $45 directly at Jostens.  Orders were on the Super Bill at Open House, but afterwards they have been online through Jostens. We only order the number of books that have been paid. If you don't order one, we likely won't have one to sell you!

Your child will love this wonderful hardbound keepsake. Each child is featured with an individual photo and a class photo, along with lots of special activity photos from throughout the year. (speaking of candids, send them to malia.escobar@emory.edu!)

GA SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY

Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.

Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.

  • Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.

  • Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.
