THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
We are extending the deadline until this Thursday!
We have not received nearly what we need to fill these bags. Please help us!
The student council and PTA want to provide the men of Central Night Shelter with some much needed supplies in a special reusable Valentine's Day drawstring backpack. Please help us by sending in supplies that have been organized by grade (below). The various dollar stores are GREAT places to find a lot of the things we need:
PK/K = Body Wash and Deodorant
1st = Men's sized Flip Flops and Lip Balm
2nd = Packages of Disposable Razors and Wipes
3rd = Small packs of Tissues and Men's sized WHITE Socks
4th = Men's sized Gloves, Men's sized WHITE Socks, Cough Drops/Hard Candy
5th = Non-perishable snacks and Men's sized Flip Flops
You give the items directly to your teacher or bring them straight to the gym where supplies are being collected.
Student council will meet on February 8 to create Valentine's cards and fill the backpacks with the supplies. If your child would like to make a card (or more!), please encourage them to do so and send them in too!
URGENT CALL FOR CENTRAL NIGHT SHELTER SUPPLIES!!
Judging by these faces, we think Slime Day was a BIG success!
Saturday February 24th at 6:30
Give a Family Donation
Please consider donating something for others to bid on.
Donations can range from gift cards to your favorite restaurant to a week at a beach house.
Grade Level Gifts
We have asked every class to donate money towards a grade level item. If you're having trouble coming up with a family donation, this is a great option. Any and all contributions are greatly appreciated (even a few dollars are helpful), and the grade that collects the most funds will receive a pajama day and pizza party!
Cash or check (made to Fernbank Foundation) can be given to your teacher.
Participate in the Online Auction
...and Attend the Event!
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART IS KICKING OFF TODAY!
What a fun day we had!
Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, the PE teachers, and the other staff who jumped in to help us pull off this super-fun activity without a hitch! We could NOT have done this without you!
What school would actually attempt to do a hands-on science experiment for 860+ students? Fernbank, of course! If you haven't realized it until now, Fernbank is truly passionate about interactive learning. We LOVE giving kids the opportunity to learn by experiencing - not just looking at textbooks and a screen.
This is what the Fernbank Foundation is all about.
Every dollar that you have given and will give to our foundation gives Fernbank the materials we need to stock our science lab and art department, purchase fun curriculum like the Flying Classroom, pay for the salary of our enrichment staff and assistant art teacher, provide continuing education for our teachers, and more.
THIS is why we hold our annual auction and ask that you help us Fund the Fern.
We know we ask for a lot - but we believe it makes all the difference. So as we get ready for the auction, please do what you can to help support us - give a family donation, contribute to your grade-level gift (see below), bid during the online auction, and of course, come to the event!
The event will take place February 5th-February 16th in PE class. Students will be learning about the heart and jump-roping during PE. Our goal is for every student to raise $5.00. The money goes to the American Heart Association. The Last day to turn in money is February 16th. Thank you for your support.

HAVE YOU BEEN LOGGING THOSE READING HOURS?
Interested in your student earning a free summer ticket to 6 Flags Over Georgia in honor of reading 6 hours? In the January 10th courier, teachers sent a letter (and required Reading Log form) about the 2018 Six Flags Six Hour Reading Program for Fernbank Elementary. (Letter/forms are also available in English and Spanish in the Library).
Students who want to participate in this program use the Reading Log form to record 6 hours of reading accomplished between January 1 and February 23. If you TURN THE READING LOG IN TO TEACHER by February 23 (properly signed by parent, etc.), your student will receive one ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia Amusement Park for a summer visit. Tickets will be sent home in courier as soon as we get them in May.

Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. Also, on December 20, 2017 parents are welcomed to take the parent survey at Fernbank Elementary School. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.
KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP IS MARCH 16TH

PLASTIC FILM CHALLENGE & CAFETERIA RANGERS
Did you know that polystyrene products are everywhere? From coffee cup lids to straws, cutlery, and cups. You can identify these plastics by the number "6" on the bottom. These plastics are made from styrene, a known animal carcinogen that was found to be "possible carcinogenic to humans."
Do you know your plastic numbers?
Read and inform yourself about how plastics affect your health and the environment. Check out this website:
Plastic Film Challenge
Let's teach our students and community that our earth is valuable and what positive actions we can take to counterbalance the concept of a "throw away" culture.
We all consume so much plastic film.
Go Green is partnering with Trex -- a decking brand and inventor of a wood-alternative composite of decking -- to participate in a Plastic Film Challenge to repurpose the plastic film we typically throw away.
Please collect your clean, dry, empty plastic bags and film packaging:
* bread bags
* case overwrap
* cereal liners
* dry cleaning bags
* food storage bags
* grocery bags
* ice bags
* LDPE/HDPE films
* newspaper sleeves
* packaging air pillows
* pellet bags
* produce bags
* product wrap
* salt bags
We will have collection bins in the front of the school until Earth Day in April!
We need YOUR help!! Please come to the cafeteria on Friday 2/9 anytime during lunch shifts (10:30-12:30) and help the students sort their food waste, packaging, salvage students' untouched food and collect polystyrene trays!!
We are working on a waste audit and want to share our findings with the school in order to make sustainable improvements for the Fernbank community!
Let us know if you want to volunteer!! If you could come for one or more lunch shifts that would be fantastic!!
Check out our blog for inspiration and ideas!
