THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
Our students and teachers had all the fun during our fall fundraising drive...
Parents - now it's YOUR turn for some fun!
Saturday February 24th at 6:30
Each year, we hold an auction in the late winter/spring to raise money for the Fernbank Foundations budgeted commitments. This fall's Fund the Fern drive made huge strides towards our goal, but we have a lot more to raise!
The annual auction is a BLAST. It's an adults-only event where parents and staff dress up, socialize and enjoy a delicious spread of food, drinks, a live band and find lots of fabulous items to bid on!
4 Ways You Can Participate in this Year’s Auction Efforts:
1. Donate something for the auction:
2. Contribute Money to the Special Auction Item for your Child's Grade
This is in lieu of class baskets.
You will be receiving information about this from your room parents.
3. Volunteer your time
Right now our committee is working hard to get business donations but we could really use more help. If you have some time, please email us and let us know!
4. Participate in the Online Auction and Attend the Event!
Mark your calendar and book a sitter today...
you won't want to miss this awesome event!
SLIME DAY IS FRIDAY!!
All students will get to make their very own slime!
We love that slime day doubles as an opportunity for students to participate in a hands-on STEM experiment! Did you know that making slime is actually a polymer experiment?? How cool is that?
With 860+ students, this could get crazy without your help!! Students will be doing their experiments grade by grade in the gym. We are doing as much prepping as possible to make sure that it goes as smoothly as possible.
Can you help us tomorrow, Wednesday January 17th, right after drop-off? We will be meeting in the conference room to start ziplock-bagging up 4 oz of Elmer's glue per student. That's a lot of bagging! Can you help? Sign up here.
What about Friday? Ideally we would like to have 3 volunteers per class during slime making. Ms. Ray will be leading the experiment but we will need volunteers to add ingredients to the bags and assist the students. Can you help? Sign up here.
Thank you to Fernbank parent Stephanie James, who works for Newell. She was able to provide 50 gallons of Elmer's Glue at cost so we could do this experiment! Elmer's will be sending a representative from their marketing team to take pictures and help document this fun event. She won't be taking pictures of your student's face unless she has a signed photo release. She will bring the releases the day of the event so we encourage you to come lend a hand and sign one (...although we can't guarantee that your child will appear in one of their campaigns!).

SPELLING BEE RESULTS
Thank you to all involved in the 2018 Fernbank 4th/5th School Spelling Bee-- First place winners from the Class Bees, and teachers and administration who served as officials!
This year's Bee took place on Friday, January 12. After introductions and reading of the rules, we began the Bee at 9:00. The first portion went almost an hour (16 rounds) in front of our polite and patient audience of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes and parents of students in the Bee.
At 9:55 (in order to get the cafeteria ready for lunch) we had to dismiss classes and take our remaining 3 spellers to the conference room.
We went on through Round 24 and saw grace-under-pressure and brilliant spelling shown by:
---Caroline Rogers, (4th/Sturkey)....1st place (She will go on to represent Fernbank at the County Bee on Feb. 8)
---Nicholas Pirone (5th/Myrick)... 2nd place (He will serve as our alternate for County Bee)
---Anushruti Ram (4th/Haas)... 3rd place
Wonderful spelling and poise was shown by our other spellers:
Claire Srubas (4th/Boyce)
Caleb Gurbaxani, (4th/Boyd)
Zoe Marshall, (4th/Pitt)
Gabrielle Hamblin, (5th/Haley)
Samuel Elkon, (5th/Martin)
Jalia Poole, (5th/Muller)
Big thanks to Ms. Ray and Spelling Bee Officials:

FERNBANK'S ANNUAL BLOOD DRIVE
Mark Tuesday January 23rd for Fernbank's 16th annual Red Cross Blood Drive! There are so many reasons to donate blood:
It feels great to donate!
You get free juice and delicious cookies.
It's something you can spare – most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
You will be someone's hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation.

GA SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY
Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. Also, on December 20, 2017 parents are welcomed to take the parent survey at Fernbank Elementary School. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.
HONORING SERVICE & GOOD DEEDS
MLK Day is recognized as a service day to many of us. In honor of yesterday's special holiday, the Flash will start periodically recognizing students who have done something above and beyond for our school or our community.
We will start with the Samai siblings this week! Isabel and her little brother Zach sold cucumbers this summer and raised $40. They earned the money to give to our cafeteria to pay for student lunch debts. Thank you Isabel and Zach!
Did your child serve in some way for MLK Day or another time? Let us know by replying to our post with a description (and a picture if you have one) on our Facebook page!
For any questions related to PTA programs/events or to provide feedback, please email our co-presidents Cindy Spalding and Beth Collums at
