REMEMBER TO TURN IN YOUR BOX TOPS!!
February 1st is the last day to turn in your box tops! Box Tops must be collected by Feb. 1st so please get those in soon!
We are collecting them in the special Box Top receptacle just inside the drop-off doors near the office.
SLIME DAY IS THIS FRIDAY, FEB. 2ND & VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED
All students will get to make their very own slime!
We love that slime day doubles as an opportunity for students to participate in a hands-on STEM experiment! Did you know that making slime is actually a polymer experiment?? How cool is that?
Slime Day will take the place of PE's "Fun Friday". PE time is planning time for our teachers, so we need as many volunteers as possible to pull this off successfully. We will now be conducting the slime experiment in the cafeteria which will keep things a little more orderly. Please sign up here to help with the event.
Thanks to those of you who have already signed up! If you have committed via your teacher, please also put your name on the sign-up genius with a note of who's class you will be helping.
Remember, Elmer's will be sending a representative from their marketing team to take pictures and help document this fun event! Join us!
MATH NIGHT IS THIS THURSDAY, FEB. 1ST
Bring your kids to Math Night on Thursday, February 1st at 6pm in the Fernbank cafeteria.
At Mathnasium Math Night, you and your kids will roam from table to table in the Fernbank cafeteria to play various fun math games together, led by Mathnasium staff members and volunteers. Get your Math Night "passport" stamped at each game station to be eligible for raffle prizes (see below) at the end of the night!
Every student who completes a passport gets a goody bag and will be entered into a raffle for FREE STUFF at Mathnasium of Decatur. When we say free stuff, we mean: Amazon Kindle Tablet (2), Amazon gift cards, Batman Drone, Remote Control Flying Shark, BB8 Robot, MiP coding robot, kid's baking set, Beanie Boos, math games, board games, other gift cards, and more! Enrolled Mathnasium students get even more incentives for coming and bringing friends! Download the flyer for more details.
Since this event was rescheduled please let us know how many kids you'll be bringing by clicking here.
If your kids can participate without your assistance and you are able to help during the event, please email email@example.com. Thank you!
PROSPECTIVE PARENT MEETING THIS THURSDAY, FEB. 1ST
We will be holding a prospective parent meeting this Thursday February 1st from 9am-10:30am. Because many school choice candidate parents will be present, we are expecting a large number of attendees. If you are very familiar with Fernbank and are comfortable giving a tour (and answering questions), we could use your help!! Please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
PRE-K LOTTERY WILL BE HELD MARCH 20TH
If you have a youngster who is eligible for GA Pre-K and live in the Fernbank attendance zone, you can enter your child into the Pre-K lottery on Tuesday March 20th between 8:30-1:00 p.m. The drawing will be done at 1:15 and you will know then if your child got a spot!

5TH GRADE PARENTS!
Have you paid your dues this year? Please send in $50 per 5th grader! Dues pay for end-of-year activities such as the 5th grade party, the 5th grade graduation and reception, the class gift and teacher gifts. Fernbank has been so good to our kiddos and they have worked so hard, let’s make sure we give them a send off they deserve! The Fifth grade committee relies on dues to make this possible. Questions? Contact Alyse Ramer at email@example.com
FIFTH GRADE T-SHIRTS: There have been a few requests for additional 5th grade t-shirts - if you are interested in purchasing one, please contact Alyse Ramer at firstname.lastname@example.org. If there is enough interest, we will place a second order.
SPIRIT NIGHT AT MARCO'S PIZZA WEDNESDAY
Our next Spirit Day IS WEDNESDAY! Come out and support Fernbank by dining with Marco's Pizza in Decatur this Wednesday, 1/31/18. You can order for delivery, pick up, by phone or by internet for lunch or dinner (both!). Don’t forget to say you’re there for Fernbank! If you place an order online, please follow up with a call to let the store know your order is for Fernbank Elementary. A percentage of all sales will be donated back to the school. This is a great way to support the school and have a pizza night - let Marco's do the cooking!
HAVE YOU TURNED IN YOUR SHELTER SUPPLIES? FRIDAY IS THE DEADLINE!
The student council and PTA are teaming up this year to provide the men of Central Night Shelter with some much needed supplies, and a special reusable Valentine's Day drawstring backpack. FERNBANK READING BOWL TEAM SHINES AT THE COMPETITION
This past Saturday, January 27, our Reading Bowl Team represented Fernbank at the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB). Although we did not place in the top 3, our team of five 4th Graders was one of the ten highest scoring teams out of 56 DeKalb elementary schools.
We are so proud of our Reading Bowl Team. The five 4th graders who represented Fernbank this year are: Caroline Rogers, Maja Draffin, Adah Rozell, Armond Pierce, and Gavin Brown.
Our Team read 20 novels on the HRRB list, and worked to memorize details and get ready for the quiz-buzzer competition where they met in six rounds with other schools. Thanks to excellent teamwork and the leadership of Caroline Rogers, our students answered a total of 41 out of 60 questions!
Big thanks goes to teacher Tonja Davis for representing Fernbank as a volunteer console judge at the HRRB competition, which lasted from noon till 5pm on Saturday.
Ms. Jacobs, Ms. Muller, Ms. Davis, Ms. Chewning, and Ms. Vaughan have worked together since last September to promote and meet and share about the Reading Bowl books with lots of interested 4th and 5th graders. In December, we had tryouts for the competition team. We all worked through January to prepare the students, and then Ms. Jacobs served as Teacher Coach with the team at the HRRB on Saturday.
The students on our team agree that the best part of HRRB was having read so many great books. We will continue to promote and share about these 20 books to all Fernbank 4th and 5th graders!
HAVE YOU BEEN LOGGING THOSE READING HOURS?
Interested in your student earning a free summer ticket to 6 Flags Over Georgia in honor of reading 6 hours? In the January 10th courier, teachers sent a letter (and required Reading Log form) about the 2018 Six Flags Six Hour Reading Program for Fernbank Elementary. (Letter/forms are also available in English and Spanish in the Library).
Students who want to participate in this program use the Reading Log form to record 6 hours of reading accomplished between January 1 and February 23. If you TURN THE READING LOG IN TO TEACHER by February 23 (properly signed by parent, etc.), your student will receive one ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia Amusement Park for a summer visit. Tickets will be sent home in courier as soon as we get them in May.

Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. Also, on December 20, 2017 parents are welcomed to take the parent survey at Fernbank Elementary School. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.
HONORING SERVICE & GOOD DEEDS
Talk about a great way to spend a snow day!
