Get ready for some fun, Fernbank parents...
the auction is coming up!
During our fall Fund the Fern drive, you helped us raise more than $57,000. Amazing! But, in order for Fernbank Foundation to honor its budgeted commitments, we need to raise a lot more money. Each year we hold an auction in the late winter/spring to help us to do that.
The annual auction is FUN. It's an adults-only event where parents and staff dress up, socialize and enjoy a delicious spread of food, drinks, a live band and find lots of fabulous items to bid on!
Mark your calendar and book a sitter today...
you won't want to miss this awesome event!
REMEMBER SLIME DAY??
We are super excited to announce that we will soon be honoring the final Fund the Fern incentive for students...Schoolwide Slime Day is happening this month!
With so much going on in November and December, we thought January would be the perfect time for this super fun activity. It is scheduled for Friday January 19th!

WANT TO GET YOUR KIDS EXCITED ABOUT MATH??
Then join us for Mathnasium Math Night at Fernbank at 6pm on Thursday, January 18th!
During Math Night, there will be ten math game/activity stations that will run concurrently with one another. Each student will receive a "Passport" that is marked at the completion of each station. We will provide goody bags for each student who completes each of the 10 stations! We aim to generate lots of enthusiasm about math while having fun with both kids and parents.
Let us know how many kids are coming so we can bring enough snacks and goody bags!
We will need a few parent volunteers to lend a hand. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you're available to help.
SAGAMORE HILLS MATH TOURNAMENT
The tournament will be held on Saturday, January 20, and is open to all 3rd-, 4th-, and 5th-graders. To participate, you must register directly with Sagamore Hills, but we will also have a couple of (fun!) orientation/practice sessions beforehand with the Fernbank students.
If you've registered your child for the tournament, please contact Beth Urban Hart at email@example.com to be included in these practice sessions and so we know who's participating as we plan for the team event.
SCIENCE FAIR IS COMING UP
The Science Fair is open to all 4th and 5th grade students. It is required for all Discovery Program students (students who have tested and been accepted into the gifted program) but all students may participate.
Permission slips and project proposals are due this Thursday January 11th, projects are due Wednesday February 14th, and family science fair night is on Thursday February 15th from 6p-8p!

FERNBANK'S ANNUAL BLOOD DRIVE
JOIN THE GO GREEN CLUB AT FERNBANK!
Our club educates and empowers our kids and community to be more aware of their impact on the environment and to develop earth friendly habits. We meet the first Tuesday of the month from 2:30-3:30. We have a few more spots!!
Please SIGN UP or invite friends who would like to register!
Please check out our blog to see all the cool things we are doing
and share with your friends/teachers/community!!
Remember to follow our December checklist!
What are some healthy green habits you and your family already do?
What other green habits would you like to incorporate at school, work, and home?
COLLABORATIVE Repurposed Art
Go GREEN collected so many plastic bottles and created an art piece!
A whale filled up with plastic bottles to represent the devastating effects of plastic consumption (especially single-use plastics) to our oceans and marine life. How can we reduce our plastic consumption? Where does plastic go when we "throw it away"?
If you around school this week, check out our plastic whale on display in the hallway by the gym!
Email us with comments/ideas/collaborations.
We would love to hear from you!
Mark Tuesday January 23rd for Fernbank's 16th annual Red Cross Blood Drive! There are so many reasons to donate blood:
It feels great to donate!
You get free juice and delicious cookies.
It's something you can spare – most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
You will be someone's hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation.
GA SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY
Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. Also, on December 20, 2017 parents are welcomed to take the parent survey at Fernbank Elementary School. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.
For any questions related to PTA programs/events or to provide feedback, please email our co-presidents Cindy Spalding and Beth Collums at
