PEACE FOR PI THIS WEDNESDAY
This Wednesday is Pi Day because the date is March 14 th or 3.14!
Pi is often written using the Greek symbol π
Pi is the distance all the way around a circle divided by all the way across it—it looks a lot like a peace sign already!
Pi is always equal to 3.14159265358979323846... (the digits go on forever without repeating!) no matter how big or small a circle is the ratio between the circumference (around) and the diameter (straight across.)
This year we want to celebrate Pi Day as Peace for Pi Day at Fernbank Elementary School. This is an opportunity to learn more about Pi and Peace so we hope you will do that on Pi Day!
We hope that our students and staff will all wear their Peace signs and symbols and join with us as we celebrate Peace for Pi!!!

You don't have to have any gardening or landscaping experience, we'd love to see any and all families who would like to help us keep our grounds looking great!
If you have any questions, email Betsy Wallace at firstname.lastname@example.org.
HOW DID THE SCHOOL GARDEN'S KALE SMOOTHIE DAY GO?
Judging from these smiles, we'd say it went great!!
Here's a note from Betsy Wallace, head of our School Garden committee:
We had so much fun in the garden last Monday! The science classes helped pick and wash the greens, our great parent volunteers manned the blender and we served 800+ students kale and collard smoothies from our very own Fernbank School Garden.
Bananas that weren’t used were given to classrooms for an extra snack. The third graders helped bag up extra greens to put in the teachers lounge for our wonderful staff to take home.
Thank you so much to our science teacher, Ms. Spencer and our garden manager, Ms. Dasher and all the parent volunteers/fruit providers that made this such a great event!

FERNBANK GO GREEN CLUB NEWS
We give a big thanks to Betsy Wallace, our garden chair for helping us at our March Go Green meeting last week!
Our go green students reused the plastic glue containers we saved from Slime Day and planted perennials for the pollinator garden!!
We also reused plastic water bottles from our collection box to plant mini take-home perennials. We also started a seed library which will be available for checkout in the media center in the near future! Then we went outside to the garden after the rain and ran wildly spreading wildflower seeds.
Here's an article that discusses the sustainability of perennials and their positive impact.
a big reduction in soil erosion!!!!
less (or no) fertilizer!
less water consumed!
PLASTIC FILM CHALLENGE
Thank you Fernbank for collecting and bringing in plastic film for our plastic film challenge!
Our go green students weighed all of our plastic film that was overflowing from the bins and we have collected
20 pounds of plastic film – just in the month of February!!
We are making a positive impact by helping keep this waste out of our landfills and waterways. Each month,
we will weigh and drop the plastic film off at Sprouts and the film will be recycled into something new!
Please keep collecting and dropping off your plastic film (plastic grocery bags, bread bags, dry cleaning bags, clean ziploc bags)
in the collection boxes in the front of school. The plastic film challenge will continue through Earth Day in April.
Thank you for helping us build a healthier, more sustainable Fernbank!!

CONGRATS TO THE FERNBANK CHESS TEAM!
Congrats to our Fernbank K-1 , K-3 & K-5 chess teams! ALL grades qualified to compete at the championship in 2 weeks! Go, Fernbank!
THE CLINIC COULD USE SOME PANTS!
Not surprisingly, our clinic goes though quite a few clothes in a week. Some are washed and returned but some get mixed up in clothes at home and never make it back.
Ms. Fenlon would like to ask parents to consider donating some pants (size 5 and up) that your child has outgrown. Girls and boys styles would be great! She has plenty of underwear and t-shirts...just a shortage of bottoms.
Drop them off straight to the clinic. Thank you in advance for your consideration!

GA SCHOOL CLIMATE PARENT SURVEY
Parents & Guardians:
We would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to participate in the annual Georgia School's Parent Survey. The data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating. The Georgia Parent Survey is modeled after the student survey and contains 24 questions. Parents will be able to complete the survey using their personal computers, smartphones or tablets. The Georgia Parent Survey is also available in Spanish. Parents may select the Spanish version within the survey. Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis. Take the survey now.
Georgia Student Health Survey II
The Georgia Student Health Survey for third - fifth grade is a brief 15 minute survey. Please encourage students to take the questions seriously and answer truthfully. The results are used to guide each school's School Climate Initiatives, provide direction for health curriculum, provide goals for drug prevention education, and more.
Parents can opt their child out of this survey by completing a Passive Permission/Opt Out Form for their child's grade level. Copies of the student survey questions, and parent permission forms are available on this webpage.
Participation is voluntary; however, each school must obtain 75 percent student participation to receive a Climate Star Rating.
For any questions related to PTA programs/events or to provide feedback, please email our co-presidents Cindy Spalding and Beth Collums at
