THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
THE FERNBANK FOLLIES WERE FRIDAY - SO FUN!
Thank you to Ms. Briss and Ms. Johnson, who organized and emceed the Fernbank Follies for any 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students who wanted to perform! We had some awesome singers, dancers, comedians, musicians, and more who took the stage and showcased their talents. I guarantee everyone in the audience enjoyed the show!
LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE NOW! NO MORE CHECK-OUTS - JUST CHECK-INS
The last day for student book checkout was this past Friday, May 11. All student books are now due to be returned. In other words, our Library is now closed for student checkout, but open for book returns.
Ms. Jacobs--- aka "The Library Sheriff" --- will be joined by her trusty Deputy, Ms. Richmond, as we spend the last 2 weeks of school rounding up all the books (or replacement-cost-fees) and getting the Library Ranch ready for next year!
Big thanks to our PTA for bringing Scholastic Spring Book Fair to our Library this week!
THE BOOK FAIR STARTED TODAY!
The Spring Book Fair kicks off for Fernbank students today, Monday, May 14th, and runs through Friday, May 18th. It is a great opportunity for kids to find new books while supporting their school. We will have extended hours after the Book Float Parade on May 18th for everyone to stop in and shop. Flyers and class shopping schedules were sent home in last Thursday's courier.
We cannot make the book fair happen without volunteers and would love to have your help. Shifts are 30 minutes long and a fun way to spend time with students, fellow parents and books! If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here. Contact Jonna.email@example.com with any questions.
OUR ANNUAL BOOK FLOAT PARADE IS FRIDAY
Can't come in person? Video available online May 21!
Many thanks to Fernbank for preparing to celebrate favorite books during our tradition of the Annual BookFloat Parade. Friday, May 18, 1:15-1:45 our classes will parade around the parking lot in front of school, each class celebrating a different book, author, genre, in different ways.
A simple VIDEO of the parade will be posted online by Monday, May 21... we know that it can be challenging to come in person to the parade (PARKING and TRAFFIC is usually the primary challenge), so we hope the video will allow all families to share in the parade experience.
WHICH CLASSES WILL WIN "KING OF POPS IN THE GARDEN"!?!?
Did you know….
Each Fernbank class ends up with so many extra school supplies at the end of year. We want YOU to start thinking about what could we do with all the barely used spiral notebooks, almost empty glue bottles, scissors, broken crayons, half used markers, pencils without erasers, etc.!
Help us end the 2017-2018 school year with less waste and positive community impact by taking part in our contest!
Each class (students, teacher and parents) should collaborate on and then propose ONE plan to avoid end of year classroom supplies ending up in a landfill. ONE class per grade will win a KING of POPS popsicle party in the garden the last week of school!!!
Here is how it works:
Each class should work together (students, teacher and parents) and brainstorm ideas for what Fernbank should do with our leftover school supplies
Each class should decide one ONE idea/plan to submit to the contest
The idea/plan must be submitted in writing to firstname.lastname@example.org NO LATER THAN end of school day 5/15/18
The submission must detail plans for all classroom school supplies (paper, notebooks, glue, scissors, rulers, pencils, markers, crayons, expo markers, etc.)
Each plan may have multiple paths for different items (Some supplies could get reused, others recycled, others donated, etc.
The class that submits an idea/plan must commit to executing it and supporting other classes in doing the same.
This diversion contest is brought to you by the Fernbank Sustainability Initiative. It will be judged by the Fernbank Sustainability Initiative team and a member of administration.
Fernbank has launched a Sustainability Initiative, initiated by parents who are compelled to steward, conserve, and protect our environment and our community. Our mission is to support Fernbank Elementary in becoming environmentally mindful,
resource responsible and sustainability integrated. If you have ideas or would like to get involved, talk to Justine Rubin, Karen
Javits, Betsy Wallace or Stacey Lusk or email us with questions. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
PLEASE SETTLE CAFETERIA ACCOUNTS BY THIS FRIDAY!
We are requesting that you please take care of any account balances on your cafeteria accounts by Friday. Students who have exceeded the funds in their cafeteria account will not be allowed to incur additional charges to their account. The student will receive a courtesy meal until the balance is paid. A courtesy breakfast meal consists of toast and jelly and 8 oz. milk or 4 oz. juice. Lunch consists of a grilled cheese sandwich and milk.
Your children and their well-being is of paramount importance to us! We have been sending out negative balance letters and emails so that you will be aware of your child's balances. We would greatly appreciate it if you would take care of these balances as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Barrett (nutritional manager) or Ms. Morrow (assistant manager) at 678-874-9328.
HONORS DAY FOR K-4TH GRADES IS TUESDAY, MAY 22
Parents are welcome to go to their student's classroom to celebrate the school year. Teachers typically hand out awards, children sing or present something to the parents and more.
Here are the times (which are staggered so parents with children in multiple grades can attend more than one):
8:00-8:45 - Kindergarten
9:00-9:45 - 1st Grade
10:00-10:45 - 4th Grade
12:00-12:45 - 2nd Grade
1:15-2:00 - 3rd Grade
AND FOR 5TH GRADE...
Monday May 21st: 5th grade party!! It will be from 4:30-6:30 pm at Fernbank. Sound kind of lame? We promise this party will be anything but lame! We have an awesome theme and A LOT of surprises planned! Email Alyse Ramer if you are interested in chaperoning.
Wednesday May 23rd: Starting at 9am, we will have our 5th grade graduation ceremony.
Thursday May 24th is the last day of school and it's tradition for the 5th graders to "walk the halls" and say goodbye to the school. Let's just say you might want to send some tissues! This tradition will begin right around 1:00 pm.
Have you paid your 5th grade dues??
Please send in $50 per 5th grader! Dues pay for end of year activities such as the 5th grade party, the 5th grade graduation and reception, the class gift and teacher gifts. Fernbank has been so good to our kiddos and they have worked so hard, let’s make sure we give them a send off they deserve! The Fifth grade committee relies on dues to make this possible. Questions? Contact Alyse Ramer at
YEARBOOKS ARE IN!
...didn't order one but want one after all?
We have a limited number of yearbooks that we purchased along with those that were ordered in advance by parents. Order them via our online store and we will deliver them via your oldest Fernbank child.

No registration paperwork will be accepted without the $25 fee.

HAVE YOU TURNED IN YOUR PROOF OF RESIDENCY?

THANK YOU FOR RAISING MONEY FOR RELAY FOR LIFE
Thank you, Fernbank, for raising $874 for American Cancer Society (Relay For Life)!
Fernbank Relay for Life Teacher Team and our wonderful Beta Club students are so proud that Fernbank continues our 20+ years of helping to do our part in the fight against cancer. This year we raised $874 through donations from individuals online, as well as from the community on Hat Day and Spirit Week. Many thanks to all who came to the DeKalb Relay For Life event in April, and to our Beta Club for particularly supporting this fundraiser!
5TH GRADE PARENTS, THANK YOU FOR THE AWESOME SUNBRELLAS!
Have you noticed the new sunbrellas out on the patio? Every year the Fifth Grade class gives something back to Fernbank. This year, the parents of the Class of 2018 gave the gift of sunbrellas so that the teachers and staff can enjoy lunch outside.
Thanks to the 5th Grade Committee for coordinating this effort and to some hardworking Fifth Graders for helping set them up!
