THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES

END THE YEAR EATING PIZZA AND EARNING MONEY FOR FERNBANK!

Come celebrate the end of the year at Blaze Pizza this Wednesday, May 23rd, between 5-9pm! It’s been a great year and what better way to celebrate and kick off the summer than a night of pizza with friends. And the best part is that 20% of all sales will be donated back to the school!

*VERY IMPORTANT*  You must bring in this linked flyer and show it when you order your food for Fernbank to get the 20%. You can bring it in hand or show a copy of it on your phone. A copy went home in last week’s courier and we have some additional copies in the front office. Look forward to seeing you there! (Note - the flyer says 4-8pm but we will be there from 5-9pm!)

WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL (AND OUTDOOR!) BOOK FLOAT PARADE

Thank you to teachers, students, and families who made our Book Float Parade this past Friday so fabulous! The weather cooperated and it was a delight to get to parade outside. The 5th grade band provided rousing marching music and the floats, signs, and costumes from students, teacher, and parents was visible evidence of Fernbank's creativity and love of books. You can watch a video of our parade here!

PUTTING THIS YEAR "IN THE BOOKS" (LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE NOW!)

Big thanks to our PTA --- especially Coordinator Jonna Osborne---for bringing Scholastic Spring BookFair to our Library last week! It was a wonderful success!

On a more somber note, all student library books are now due to be returned. (Our Library is now closed for student checkout, but open for book returns). As of Friday afternoon, more than 150 students still had books out.

If a book is not returned (or replacement cost paid for), it will still be on student's record when they return in August---they will not be able to checkout until issue is taken care of. Also, DCSD policy requires us to hold report cards if books are still out on last day of school.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES MAY NOW BE ORDERED FOR 2018-19

Our online school supply link is up and running!
We are working again with EPI to manage our school supply purchasing for our parents. It's super convenient, and since we order so many supplies, parents and our school benefit from the bulk pricing!

You know all those paper towels, tissues, hand sanitizer, and things you're always lugging to school on the first day? You no longer have to do that if you purchase your supplies through EPI! What a time saver! There are two line items for each grade - one is for the school supplies and one is for the classroom supplies. We encourage you to buy both!

Here's the link to purchase. Use the code FER007 to pull up our school's account. Here's a cool video about how purchasing through EPI is a win-win for everyone!

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH ALL THE LEFTOVER SUPPLIES FROM THIS YEAR?

Teachers, staff, and families!!!!

Let's keep our Fernbank end of year school supplies from entering the landfill

and polluting our waterways. Instead of dumping those composition books, folders,

and used glue sticks in the trash; let's think about what we can do to reduce our

environmental footprint.

Feel free to take supplies home and reuse and repurpose,

but please don't throw away!! Let's not waste Fernbank!

Please consider placing any unwanted or unused end of year school supplies

in the labeled collection bins provided on each floor in the hallways until

the last day of school.

We will reuse recycle, and donate the items we collect! We will also create a back up

stock for teachers who need supplies and also store extras in the copy room.

We can help create a more sustainable Fernbank

and take actions to protect our environment!

Thank you from the Fernbank Sustainability Initiative!!!

HONORS DAY FOR K-4TH GRADES IS TOMORROW, TUESDAY, MAY 22

Parents are welcome to go to their student's classroom to celebrate the school year. Teachers typically hand out awards, children sing or present something to the parents and more.

Here are the times (which are staggered so parents with children in multiple grades can attend more than one):

 8:00-8:45 - Kindergarten

 9:00-9:45 - 1st Grade

10:00-10:45 - 4th Grade

12:00-12:45 - 2nd Grade

1:15-2:00 - 3rd Grade

AND FOR 5TH GRADE...

TONIGHT May 21st: 5th grade party!! It will be from 4:30-6:30 pm at Fernbank!

Wednesday May 23rd: Starting at 9am, we will have our 5th grade graduation ceremony. Tickets went home in last week's courier. There are 4 tickets per student.

Thursday May 24th is the last day of school and it's tradition for the 5th graders to "walk the halls" and say goodbye to the school. Let's just say you might want to send some tissues! This tradition will begin right around 1:00 pm.

Have you paid your 5th grade dues??

Please send in $50 per 5th grader!  Dues pay for end of year activities such as the 5th grade party, the 5th grade graduation and reception, the class gift and teacher gifts.  Fernbank has been so good to our kiddos and they have worked so hard, let’s make sure we give them a send off they deserve!  The Fifth grade committee relies on dues to make this possible.  Questions? Contact Alyse Ramer at alyser@comcast.net

NO AFTER SCHOOL CARE ON THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!

Please make plans for your child to go home on the bus or be picked up directly after school on Thursday, May 24th.

AFTER SCHOOL CARE FOR NEXT YEAR

ASEDP (After care) registration for the 2018-19 school year will be available at Open House on August 1st. We will give you paperwork to complete. A $25 Registration Fee MUST be turned in with your paperwork. It must be paid by CHECK or CASH ONLY (no credit cards).

No registration paperwork will be accepted without the $25 fee.

HAVE YOU TURNED IN YOUR PROOF OF RESIDENCY?

Every year, our students must provide a current utility bill showing their residence within Fernbank's district. Send in a copy of yours to your child's teacher ASAP!

SAYING THANK YOU AND GOODBYE TO SOME WONDERFUL TEACHERS & STAFF

The end of a school year is always bittersweet as we say goodbye to those who are retiring and moving on to other endeavors.

Ms. Arrendale from Kindergarten, Mr. Wood from 3rd, Ms. Hill from the office, and Dr. Blount from special ed are all retiring this week! Thank you, thank you for your many years of service! Fernbank will miss you.

We are also saying goodbye to some wonderful teachers and staff who are moving, staying home with babies, etc!

Thank you to Ms. Chavous, Ms. Crooks, Anita Ferguson, Mr. Haley, Ms. Chewning, Ms. Ferreira, and Mr. Coile. Thank you for everything you've done for Fernbank!
