THIS WEEK'S HEADLINES
WHICH CLASSES WILL WIN "KING OF POPS IN THE GARDEN"!?!?
Did you know….
Each Fernbank class ends up with so many extra school supplies at the end of year. We want YOU to start thinking about what could we do with all the barely used spiral notebooks, almost empty glue bottles, scissors, broken crayons, half used markers, pencils without erasers, etc.!
Help us end the 2017-2018 school year with less waste and positive community impact by taking part in our contest!
Each class (students, teacher and parents) should collaborate on and then propose ONE plan to avoid end of year classroom supplies ending up in a landfill. ONE class per grade will win a KING of POPS popsicle party in the garden the last week of school!!!
Here is how it works:
Each class should work together (students, teacher and parents) and brainstorm ideas for what Fernbank should do with our leftover school supplies
Each class should decide one ONE idea/plan to submit to the contest
The idea/plan must be submitted in writing to firstname.lastname@example.org NO LATER THAN end of school day 5/15/18
The submission must detail plans for all classroom school supplies (paper, notebooks, glue, scissors, rulers, pencils, markers, crayons, expo markers, etc.)
Each plan may have multiple paths for different items (Some supplies could get reused, others recycled, others donated, etc.
The class that submits an idea/plan must commit to executing it and supporting other classes in doing the same.
This diversion contest is brought to you by the Fernbank Sustainability Initiative. It will be judged by the Fernbank Sustainability Initiative team and a member of administration.
Fernbank has launched a Sustainability Initiative, initiated by parents who are compelled to steward, conserve, and protect our environment and our community. Our mission is to support Fernbank Elementary in becoming environmentally mindful,
resource responsible and sustainability integrated. If you have ideas or would like to get involved, talk to Justine Rubin, Karen
Javits, Betsy Wallace or Stacey Lusk or email us with questions. We can't wait to see what you come up with!
THE FERNBANK FOLLIES ARE THIS FRIDAY! WOOT WOOT!
This Friday, May 11th, from 6-8 pm, many of our 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students will be performing in the Fernbank Follies! You never know what you're going to see at this super fun talent/variety show. Join us - it's free! Doors open at 5:30 pm. Call time for participants is at 5:45 pm.
Parents of participants, the formal dress rehearsal will take place after school on Thursday, May 10th. If your child cannot
attend the May 10th rehearsal, we will also be holding a rehearsal on Tuesday, May 8th. Your child may be picked up after their rehearsal time slot, which you can find on the letter that was sent home in couriers last week (or can be downloaded here). If your child tried out but his/her name does not appear on the list, email Ms. Briss or call her at the school ASAP. Everyone who tried out made the cut!
ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE THIS FRIDAY MAY 11TH!
AVOID A RUN-IN WITH THE SHERIFF!
All student books are officially due May 11, or as soon after as possible.
For the last 2 weeks of school, Ms. Jacobs--- aka "The Library Sheriff" --- will be joined by her trusty Deputy, Ms. Richmond, as we round up all the books (or replacement-cost-fees) and get the Library Ranch ready for next year!
We will be sad to close the library, but then...
...GUESS WHAT STARTS NEXT WEEK? THE BOOK FAIR!
The Spring Book Fair kicks off for Fernbank students on Monday, May 14th and runs through Friday, May 18th. It is a great opportunity for kids to find new books while supporting their school. We will have extended hours after the Book Float Parade on May 18th for everyone to stop in and shop. Flyers and class shopping schedules were sent home in last Thursday's courier.
We cannot make the book fair happen without volunteers and would love to have your help. Shifts are 30 minutes long and a fun way to spend time with students, fellow parents and books! If you would like to volunteer, please sign up here. Contact Jonna.email@example.com with any questions.
THEN WE HAVE THE BOOK FLOAT PARADE NEXT FRIDAY TOO!
Many thanks to our teachers, students, and families for preparing to celebrate favorite books during our Fernbank tradition of the Annual BookFloat Parade. All are invited to attend 1:15-1:45 pm, as our school parades around the parking lot on Friday, May 18, in front of school.
Each class is selecting a favorite book, author, or series to celebrate in a variety of parade-style ways. Our 5th grade band will be playing music to march by. Don't know what your class is doing? Reach out to your teacher or room parents!
SCHOOL COUNCIL DATE CHANGE
Fernbank School Council will be meeting on Thursday, May 17th at 3:00 pm, instead of Monday, May 14th when it was originally scheduled.
HAVE YOU TURNED IN YOUR PROOF OF RESIDENCY?
Every year, our students must provide a current utility bill showing their residence within Fernbank's district. Send in a copy of yours to your child's teacher ASAP!
ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS!!
Save these dates during the last week of school:
Monday May 21st: 5th grade party!! It will be from 4:30-6:30 pm at Fernbank. Sound kind of lame? We promise this party will be anything but lame! We have an awesome theme and A LOT of surprises planned! Email Alyse Ramer if you are interested in chaperoning.
Wednesday May 23rd: Starting at 9am, we will have our 5th grade graduation ceremony.
Thursday May 24th is the last day of school and it's tradition for the 5th graders to "walk the halls" and say goodbye to the school. Let's just say you might want to send some tissues! This tradition will begin right around 1:00 pm.
Have you paid your 5th grade dues??
Please send in $50 per 5th grader! Dues pay for end of year activities such as the 5th grade party, the 5th grade graduation and reception, the class gift and teacher gifts. Fernbank has been so good to our kiddos and they have worked so hard, let’s make sure we give them a send off they deserve! The Fifth grade committee relies on dues to make this possible. Questions? Contact Alyse Ramer at firstname.lastname@example.org
NEXT YEAR'S EXECUTIVE PTA IS NOW IN PLACE
At the PTA meeting last Monday, a new executive board was elected for the 2018-19 school year.
Hillary Kilfeather and Emily Samai, our new co-presidents
Adam Francois-Watkins and Cassie Strawn, our new co-vice presidents
Treasurer, Camille Richards
Secretary, Jaclyn Maldonado
A huge thank you goes out to Cindy Spalding and Beth Collums who served as co-presidents this school year. You've done an amazing job and we appreciate every single thing you've done for Fernbank! We would also like to thank Kate Dempsey, who has whipped our books into shape over the last two years, as treasurer! Cassie, Hillary and Emily will continue to serve on the executive board in new ways and are joined by Adam, Camille and Jaclyn.
The new executive team will be reaching out to committee heads in the coming weeks and over the summer, so we can roll into the new year ready to go. We are still placing individuals in leadership roles on the PTA and on the Fernbank Foundation Board. If you're interested, fill out the volunteer survey soon! Once you've taken the survey, be on the lookout for an email from email@example.com, as we work to place you in the perfect spot.
If you'd like to know about volunteer opportunities first, please check out our special volunteer page created just for you! Read all about our various leadership groups and committees, then take our volunteer survey so we can best match your talents and availability with our needs.
Fernbank can't run without the active participation our parents! There's an opportunity for everyone to engage, no matter your schedule. Whatever you're good at - we would love to tap into YOUR talents!
CAUGHT GREEN HANDED!
Thank you for taking green actions and being kind to our earth.
Keep submitting your entries (name, grade, homeroom and green actions)
to the box in the front of the school or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday, May 11.
Tell us about Fernbank students caught taking green actions. Some examples include: bringing re-usable water bottles, refusing straws, planting a garden, composting, turning faucet off when brushing teeth, packing a waste free lunch.
We will have another raffle with prizes next week!!
Start a green habit this week with your family!
Email us photos and/or tell us about it.
The more entries you submit, the greater chances of winning, the more you do to protect our earth, the better the planet is for everyone.
