ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL RULES

WHEN TO GET TO SCHOOL AND TARDINESS

  • We encourage parents to drop children off prior to 7:30 am to avoid traffic congestion and stress.  Carpool drop off starts at 7:00 am.

  • Teaching begins promptly at 7:50 am and students are considered late if they are not in their classrooms by 7:45 am

  • If you arrive at 7:45 am or later, you must walk your child into the front office to sign them in - they will be considered tardy

  • If you are running late, please make an effort to arrive and drop your child off in a safe manner!  SAFETY MUST BE EVERYONE'S PRIORITY

GETTING TO SCHOOL

  • Follow the carpool and walker map (see below)

  • DO NOT PASS other cars (or buses!)

  • You must STOP if a bus is loading or unloading - Red lights will be flashing

  • Both the front and the Artwood carpool lanes (on the right side of the school) may be used after 7:15 am for morning drop off.

  • Never leave your car unattended unless you have parked in designated parent parking (see map below)

  • Do not EVER get out of your car in the carpool lane - We will help your child unload and load.

  • If your child is a car rider, you must go through the carpool lane.  Any walkups will not be allowed.

  • No talking or texting on cell phones in carpool lanes.

DISMISSAL AFTER SCHOOL

  • If you need to pick your child up early from school, you must do so before 1:30 pm from the front office

  • Children riding buses are dismissed first, then carpoolers, then walkers last

  • After all buses leave, the carpool line will begin moving

CARPOOL

  • If your child is a car rider, you must go through the carpool lane.  Any walkups will not be allowed.

  • Cars line up approaching the school from Artwood Rd. Cars should turn off their cars once they line up in the queue. DO NOT LET YOUR CAR IDLE!

  • No talking or texting on cell phones in carpool lanes.

WALKERS

  • Walkers should be picked up at the front of the school after buses leave at 2:30 pm.

  • If your child is in 4th or 5th grade and you want them to walk home independently, please e-mail dana_borda@dekalbschoolsga.org or leave Dana Borda a note in the front office.  If there are younger siblings who you want to walk home with the 4th or 5th grade sibling, please write that as well.  This is a one-time written or e-mailed note that will be good for the school year.  All other walkers must be met by a parent at 2:30 pm.

  • If a friend will be walking home with your child, the friend needs a written note.

BUS INFORMATION

  • The link to our bus routes is here: https://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/documents/bus-routes/fernbank-es.pdf

  • Students in grades 3-5 can exit the bus at the bus stop without an adult present. (Younger siblings of students in grades 3-5 can also get off with the older sibling.)

  • Students in grades Pre-K - 2  with no older sibling present must be met at the bus stop by an adult. If there's no adult at the bus stop, the bus driver must return to school with that child and you must drive to Fernbank to pick up the child immediately.  Our bus drivers also drive routes for the high school and middle school, so if they must return to Fernbank with a child whose parent was not at the bus stop, they will be late for their other routes.  So if you have younger kids, please be at the bus stop in the afternoon.

  • Also, if your child is riding the bus home with a friend for a playdate, or getting off at a different stop with a friend, please send a written note. Your child needs to turn it in to the front office.  The note must be signed by our front office staff and then given to the bus driver.
