Rent the Fernbank Rock

Did you know YOU can rent and paint the Fernbank Spirit Rock? Celebrate a birthday! Express appreciation! Wish someone good luck! All while supporting our beloved school, courtesy of the Fernbank Foundation.

Details & Rental Guidelines

Reserve your rental dates and complete your payment. Reservation rates are for 1-3 days at $20/day. Get your paints ready, and have fun! Questions? Email renttherock@fernbankfoundation.org.​

​​​​​​​Who Can Reserve the Rock?
  • Fernbank Elementary families or staff ONLY
     

Reservation Rules

  • First-come, first-served

  • Max: 3 consecutive days

  • Can’t rent for another 3 days within a 10-day span unless it's for a different design.

  • Reserve the day before you want your message seen (painting allowed after 4:00 PM)

Painting Rules

  • Painting of the rock begins after 4:00 PM on the day you reserved. (For example, to have your message visible on the morning of February 26, reserve February 25—you can start painting at 4:00 PM on February 25.) The rock cannot be painted over until 4:00 PM the next day, unless you reserve additional days ($20/day). Renting for 2 days is recommended to allow for drying time or bad weather.

  • You must repaint over the old design with a base coat (Tip: to make this easier, use the same base paint color as the person before you!)

  • Allow base coat to dry before painting your design.

  • Use outdoor, water-based acrylic paint only.

  • No spray paint, oil-based paint, or adhesives Bring all painting and cleaning supplies yourself.

  • No trash cans or supplies provided.

  • Only paint on the designated rock, not elsewhere on school property.

  • Use a drop cloth, cardboard, or newspaper to protect the area around the rock. Be careful not to damage landscaping, the sidewalk, or the rock’s border.

 

​Design Restrictions

  • Positive, appropriate messages only.

  • No political, religious, offensive, or inappropriate content.

  • FES/Foundation may revoke privileges or paint over inappropriate designs.

 

Weather Plan

In the event of rain, you can:

  • Towel dry & continue

  • Use a pop-up tent

  • Reschedule via SignUpGenius for the next available day. Reschedules are not guaranteed. No refunds will be given if a new date is not available.

Suggested Supplies

  • Base coat & design paint (acrylic, outdoor)

  • Paint tray, rollers, brushes

  • Drop cloth/cardboard

  • Water + rinse cup

  • Paper plates (for mixing paint)

  • Trash bags

  • Pencil/eraser

  • Inspiration photos

  • Knee pads


Cold Weather Tips

  • Store paint in warm place before use

  • Use stiff brush, paint when sun is out

  • Allow extra drying time
